# Keeping your wallet clean with Reclaim

> Why every Solana token account holds SOL as rent, and how Reclaim in Jupiter Portfolio closes empty accounts and recovers that SOL.

The first time you acquire a token on Solana, your wallet needs a dedicated token account for it, which stores your balance of that token onchain. Opening it locks a small deposit of SOL in the account, called rent: about 0.002 SOL for accounts opened before September 2026, and less for newer ones, as Solana is lowering this deposit in steps. The rent is refundable, which is why you can reclaim it once you are done with the token.

Many users, crypto newcomers and natives alike, forget about this rent, and over time it can add up to a fair amount. Reclaiming it is like finding old money in your pants.

## Why is rent required?

Every account on Solana takes up space in the network's state. To keep its data stored onchain, an account must hold a minimum SOL balance, proportional to the size of that data. The name "rent" is historical: nobody collects it. It works as a storage deposit that stays in the account, and the full amount comes back when the account is closed. Because of it, accounts cannot be created for free in unlimited numbers.

Once you sell or send all of a token, its token account is empty, but it usually stays open with the rent inside. This means a high-activity wallet might have a decent amount of SOL sitting around as rent, unclaimed.

## Rent adds up with every new token

The rent may seem small, but it adds up quickly with active trading. It is paid once per token account, when the account is opened, not on every trade. If you trade 500 different memecoins, you open 500 token accounts, and the rent you can reclaim adds up to roughly 0.75 to 1 SOL, depending on when the accounts were opened.

Two kinds of accounts can give SOL back:

* Empty accounts: closing a token account requires a zero balance, so if you still hold a little of a token, sell or send the rest first, for example on [Spot](/user-docs/guides/spot/swap-on-spot). Closing the account returns its whole deposit.
* Accounts you keep: older accounts can hold more SOL than Solana now requires. Reclaim recovers that excess without closing the account or touching your tokens.

## How to reclaim token account rent

These steps are on [jup.ag/portfolio](https://jup.ag/portfolio), with your wallet connected: Reclaim only works for the connected wallet, not for an address you are only viewing.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Jupiter Portfolio">
    Go to [Jupiter Portfolio](https://jup.ag/portfolio) and connect your wallet. On the Positions tab, when some of your token accounts hold SOL you can recover, the Holdings header shows a **Reclaim** button with a badge showing how many tokens have SOL to recover.

    </Frame>
  </Step>

  <Step title="Click Reclaim">
    Click **Reclaim**. The Reclaim SOL dialog lists every eligible token with the SOL it returns, marked Close when its account is empty. Select the tokens to process; Estimated Reclaim shows the total SOL for your selection.

    </Frame>
  </Step>

  <Step title="Review and sign">
    Click **Review** and check the summary, then click **Reclaim SOL** and approve the transaction in your wallet. The SOL returns to your wallet.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Note>
  Reclaim never sells or moves your tokens: the balances of tokens you still hold are untouched. If you receive a token again after closing its account, a new account is opened automatically, with new rent.
</Note>

Jupiter Wallet, the browser extension, has the same feature: see [Reclaiming rent in Jupiter Wallet](/user-docs/manage/extension-wallet/portfolio#reclaiming-rent). In the Jupiter Mobile app, the equivalent is Clean Account, on the Portfolio tab: see [Clean Account](/user-docs/global/mobile/app-features#clean-account).
